Introduction

The Temple of Great Victory was built in the 14th century by the first king of the Dvaravati Dynasty, King Uthong, upon his return from studying in Sri Lanka. This quiet and ancient temple was once a renowned meditation center, where some rebels sought advice from the monks in an attempt to launch a coup on an auspicious day, but the temple still houses an unforgettable giant reclining Buddha basking in the sunlight. The central stupa of the temple, ordered to be built by the twentieth king, King Narai, in 1592, stands at 62 meters tall. It was constructed to commemorate his feat of killing a Burmese prince while riding an elephant. The name of the temple, which means "Great Victory," is also related to the fact that Myanmar built a memorial stupa inside Wat Kapho to counterbalance it. Although initially planned to be taller, it ended up slightly shorter than the stupa at Wat Kapho. Like other ancient structures, the outline of the temple can only be inferred from the remaining foundation stones on the ground. The Temple of Great Victory is famous for its 28-meter-long reclining Buddha, which peacefully lies in the northeast direction of the temple, basking in the sunlight amidst the surrounding ruins, embodying the serenity and transcendence of the Buddha image. Although not as large as the reclining Buddha in the inner city's reclining Buddha temple, it still leaves a profound impression on people. The main stupa in the temple is one of the representations of Sri Lankan style and houses a Buddha image. A beautiful central stupa is surrounded by a circle of seated Buddha images. Climbing up the stupa, you can see a small Buddha shrine, with four gilded Buddha images standing at the four corners, appearing to be inhabited by bats. From a distance, the splendid stupa of the temple and numerous seated Buddha images present themselves before your eyes.
