Introduction

On a small island in the southern town of Inle Lake region, stands the largest Buddhist temple in the area. Inside the temple, there are five small Buddha statues, which are now covered with gold foil by the worshippers, turning into five golden "knots". Surrounding the temple is the local residential area, and every Friday, the space behind the temple turns into the "Friday market," which is bigger than the usual floating market and very popular. In addition, every September to October, Inle Lake welcomes the grand Phaung Daw Oo festival, during which the five golden Buddhas in the temple are decorated and carried on a luxurious phoenix boat for a ceremonial cruise, which is a very solemn ritual.
