Introduction

The monument of King Taksin the Great stands in the center of Wongwian Yai roundabout. It was designed by Professor Silpa Bhirasri and completed in the 20th century. The monument depicts King Taksin on horseback, commemorating his relocation of the capital to Thonburi after recapturing it from the Burmese in 1767. Professor Silpa Bhirasri, originally from Italy, later became a Thai citizen and is considered the father of modern Thai art. After three years of creation, the monument was completed in 1954 and has become an iconic artwork. On December 28th, the coronation anniversary of King Taksin, many Thai people gather at the monument to pay their respects.
