Introduction
Independence Square, located on the northern coast of the capital, is the political gathering center of the Maldives. A striking flagpole stands tall, with a huge national flag hanging atop. Surrounding the square are a series of political institutions, including the police headquarters inside the Shihabudeen Hussein Adam Building and the barracks of the Maldives National Defense Force.
