Introduction

Independence Memorial Hall was constructed by the government of Sri Lanka on February 4, 1948, to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence from British colonial rule. The lion statues surrounding the Independence Memorial Hall symbolize the Sinhalese kings, and the small museum inside features relief sculptures near the ceiling, depicting Sri Lanka's history from the 5th century BC until independence. In front of the memorial hall, visitors can see the statue of Sri Lanka's founding father, Don Stephen Senanayake.
