Introduction

Yashima is a volcanic mesa peninsula located 6 kilometers east of Takamatsu City, with an elevation of 293 meters. It is named after its flat mountaintop that resembles a roof. Yashima is home to the famous historical site of Yashima Temple, which was founded by Buddhist monk Jianzhen. In addition, the Yashima Shishi-iwa Observatory is also a great spot to enjoy the stunning view of the Seto Inland Sea. Yashima was also a famous battleground during the Genpei War, a civil war that occurred eight hundred years ago. The site of the final battle at Yashima can still be seen today. In the present day, many relics left behind by the warriors of the Genpei War can still be found in Dan-no-ura, located east of Yashima, such as the Koma-ishi rock, the tomb of Sato Takeru, the Soma no Kado Trail, and the Yoritomo Bow Trail.
