Introduction

The Kitano area in Kobe still preserves the Ijinkan, the Western-style residences that were once home to foreign residents during the Meiji period. Today, visitors can explore around 20 open-converted Ijinkan buildings, which showcase the architectural styles of various countries. The most famous is the Moegi House, formerly the residence of the American consul, known for its elegant design. Additionally, the Higashi-Yuenchi area features a cluster of Ijinkan that have been converted into restaurants and cafes, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a bygone era while enjoying a meal or a cup of coffee.
