Introduction

Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, also known as El Morro, was built in 1539 and was originally used as a base for Spanish ships to defend against pirates. The fortress has been captured multiple times and has undergone various repairs. In 1983, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, visitors can see the ancient cannons facing out towards the sea and replicas of 18th-century barracks that allow for a glimpse into the soldiers' lives. The courtyard of the castle was also used as a filming location for scenes in Steven Spielberg's movie "Amistad."
