Introduction

Sipadan Island is a world-renowned diving destination. The entire island is formed by coral reefs growing on the seabed, resembling mushrooms, and is home to over three thousand species of fish and hundreds of species of coral. The most famous inhabitants here are the groups of green turtles and hawksbill turtles. Despite the increasing number of tourists in recent years and some damage to the island's biodiversity, it is still one of the closest and best diving spots to China. Located in southwest Sabah, East Malaysia, Sipadan Island is situated in the northwestern part of the Celebes Sea, 36 km from Semporna Harbour. It is promoted by the Malaysian government as the "world's top diving paradise" with its impressive and captivating underwater landscapes. To protect and develop the island, the government has implemented a permit system to control the number of visitors. Currently, the island is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Management Department and no longer has accommodation and diving facilities. A maximum of 120 people are allowed to visit per day with a Sipadan entry permit, which costs RM40 per person per day and can be arranged through local dive shops.
