Introduction

In the mid-16th century, King Setthathirat relocated the capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. He was a devout Buddhist and personally traveled to Chiang Mai to receive the emerald Buddha image from Sri Lanka, which he then carefully worshipped at the Pha That Luang Temple in Vientiane. In addition, he constructed a large stupa covering an area of a hundred acres, adorned with gold plating on its surface. Due to its unique appearance and cultural significance, it is also known as "That Luang". This grand stupa has become an important symbol of Lao Buddhist culture.
