Introduction

This monument, built in 1916, is dedicated to Spain's greatest writer, Cervantes. The centerpiece of the monument is a statue of Cervantes, holding his famous book "Don Quixote" in his right hand and covering his missing left arm with his cloak. In front of him, a bronze statue depicts the protagonist of "Don Quixote," riding a thin horse with his servant Sancho Panza following behind on a donkey. The top of the monument is surrounded by five figures representing the five continents. Behind the monument is the Spanish Building, which used to be the tallest building in Madrid.
