Friends, we three rent a car in Christchurch and travel around the South Island, and then drive across Cook Strait to Auckland. Does the car rental company cover the cost of this crossing ?

Car rental companies don't include ferry fees! And most car rental companies don't allow you to take the car across the island and Cook Strait. The car I rented from EZU company allows you to take the car across the island, the personnel ferry ticket is more than 210 RMB, the vehicle ferry ticket is more than 810 RMB (for each car). I drove from Auckland on the North Island to Wellington and then crossed the strait by ferry to Picton, and then drove around the South Island to Christchurch to return the car. You should go to Wellington after crossing the strait by ferry from Picton, then tour the North Island, and return the car to Auckland. There is an out-of-town return fee!
